Remembering 9-11

We all remember where we were on that day: school, work, running an errand, or watching tv. We all rushed in to help those in need by giving, support & prayers. Now, 10 years later, who REALLY remembers? Those who lost the ones they love. The wives of brave firemen who rushed in to help a soul they've never met.
The mom & dad who'll never have a chance to hold their son or daughter again. The brother & sister who can't call their loved one up to get advice, or just to have a laugh. The child who will never have a parent attend their recital, sport event, or birthday party. These are the people who remember. As the rest of us moved on with life, enjoying all we have, forgetting that pain & loss experienced by many.We say we are a country of freedom to worship as one pleases, but why is it God & Christianity are being plunged out? Since this tragic day, God has greatly protected our country. I hope we will never forget.

_Senior Portraits_

I got to do a makeup session this past Sunday for a Senior from Nowata! She was beautiful & had GORGEOUS eyes! I used browns (MAC) and kept it neutral on her eyes (didn't want to overpower her already pretty eyes). We used fake eyelashes to complete the look. Being in high school, she doesn't usually wear lipstick, so we just used a nude lip gloss (Mary Kay).

Tuesday's Trash to Treasure: Fringe Scarf

Scarf Tutorial
Reuse: T-shirt

Materials:
*T-shirt
*Scissors

_Start by cutting the top portion of the shirt off, right under the armpit.

_Using the cut end, begin making vertical cuts upward. The longer the strand, the longer the fringe.

_Cut all the way around - it should look like this once you're finished:

_Tug on each strand to elongate it & make it curl inward.

_Lastly, I tied knots to every other strand. This step is optional.

That's it! Place it over your head, around your neck & tuck, curl, fold or however you want to wear the un-fringed part!

*The size of the shirt will depend on how low the inside hole will hang. Mine was a men's medium, so it is longer*
*You could even put beads on the strands if you're going to knot the ends!*

Season's Change

My favorite time of the year is just about to start! I LOVE the smell of Fall & the anticipation of the holidays coming! This weekend we have had BEAUTIFUL weather! Yesterday's high was only in the 80's! I love that cold crisp feeling that comes when the temperature starts to drop.  :)  SOO, along with my mind racing with new decorating ideas, I'm also wanting to try new baking recipes! I'm not sure why, but like most I'm sure, I do most of my baking around the holidays. I go to Better Homes & Gardens' website for a lot of my ideas! I LOVE that place! Here's a couple recipes I found that I will try in the near future:

Apple-Toffee Tartlets (website)
Makes: 24 tartlets
Prep: 25 minutes
Bake: 18 minutes

Ingredients
  • 1 15-ounce package rolled refrigerated unbaked piecrust (2 crusts)
  • 2 medium baking apples, cored and chopped
  • 1/2 cup toffee pieces
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar (optional)
Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Let piecrusts stand according to package directions. In a medium bowl, combine apples, toffee pieces, brown sugar, melted butter, and salt. Set aside.
2. On a lightly floured surface, unroll one piecrust at a time. Using a round 3-inch cookie cutter, cut out dough. Reroll scraps once to cut enough additional rounds to make 24 total. Press dough rounds into 24 ungreased 1-3/4-inch muffin cups. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the apple mixture into each cup.
3. Bake in the preheated oven about 18 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Remove from muffin cups and cool completely on a wire rack. If desired, sprinkle cookies with powdered sugar. Makes 24 tartlets.
4. To Store: Layer cookies between waxed paper in an airtight container; cover. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Mini Snowball Cakes (website)
Prep: 40 min.
Bake: 10 min.
Cool: 5 min.

Ingredients
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 1 package 1-layer-size white cake mix
  • 1/2 cup canned eggnog
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup shredded coconut
  • Red or green food coloring (optional)
  • 1 3-ounce package cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons canned eggnog
Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat thirty-six 1-3/4-inch muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray (or line muffin cups with paper bake cups); set aside.
2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine white cake mix, the 1/2 cup eggnog, egg, the 1 teaspoon vanilla, and nutmeg. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed until just combined. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes until well combined, scraping side of the bowl often. Divide batter evenly among the muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full (about 1 rounded teaspoon in each). Bake in preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool cakes in pan for 5 minutes. Remove cupcakes from muffin cups and place on a wire rack. Cool completely.
3. To tint coconut, if desired, combine some of the coconut and several drops of red or green food coloring in a small resealable plastic bag. Seal bag. Using your hands, knead the bag until all coconut is tinted, adding more food coloring as necessary to reach desired color. Set tinted coconut aside.
4. For frosting, in a medium mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until well combined. Beat in powdered sugar and the 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Beat in enough eggnog (1 teaspoon at a time) to make a frosting of dipping consistency.
5. Dip tops of cooled mini cupcakes in cream cheese frosting. Immediately dip frosted tops into plain or tinted coconut. Set cupcakes upright.
6. Makes 36 mini cupcakes

Tutorial: Sailor Shirt

I found this idea out of an Urban Outfitter's book I have, "I made this...". I loved it so much that I made my daughter a matching shirt as well! This is a very easy shirt & costs under $10 to make!!

Materials:
*Shirt (new or used)
*Fabric paint
*Buttons
*Needle & Thread
*Paint brush
*Masking Tape
*Cardboard or something to use as a barrier between the shirt layers

_Start off by inserting your cardboard inside the shirt & taping stripes down the shirt. On mine I did 8 stripes, on my daughters, I did 4. You can make them as big or little as you'd like as well.

_Begin painting your stripes (the spot between the tape).

_Let the paint dry for about 15-20min, then peel the tape off. You can pull the cardboard out now too.

_Next, sew your buttons to one shoulder of the shirt. I used 3 buttons on mine, and 2 on my daughters. I tried to pick buttons that looked sailor-like.

Finished Product!

**Machine wash COLD in Handwash or Delicate cycle. Lay flat to dry**

Top Skin Care Products

My oh-so-lovely husband bought me a facial/peel off groupon a month or so ago & I finally used them! Since high school I've been not so in love with my skin...since I still get acne from time to time. Like many women I too have a hard time finding products & sticking with a routine of cleanser, toner, moisturizer, eye cream, sun block, mask etc etc I tend to just stick with cleanse and moisturize  :)  So, after my facial & peel experience, I've decided I need to take better care of my skin! I've been doing some research on what products are good - here are my findings:

Go au naturel
There are more skin-care products claiming to be "natural" or "organic" than there are reality-TV stars.
If environmental and purity standards are important to you, consider buying products made in Europe. Companies overseas making eco claims trace ingredients back to their sources to verify their natural origins.
A few of the brands that do: Lavera (lavera.com), Weleda(usa.weleda.com), and Dr. Hauschka Skincare(drhauschka.com). And while you're at it: On products from the U.S., look for the National Products Association's new Natural Seal; it certifies that 95 percent of the ingredients are truly natural and pose no suspected human health risks (for more information, visitnaturalproductsassoc.org/certifiednatural).
Use an anti-ager--now!
Don't wait for the first crow's feet to appear before you reach for that little tube. "Even women in their twenties should be using a topical retinoid--unless they're pregnant or nursing," says Francesca Fusco, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
Here's why: Retinoids, which contain vitamin A, are one of the most potent agents for preventing and reversing sun damage and signs of aging. And, says Hirsch, "they're the ultimate multitasker. They speed skin renewal by shedding dull, pore-clogging cells and increase collagen production to prevent wrinkles."
Ask your doctor about a retinoid prescription or try an OTC, such as Roc Retinol Actif Pur Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizing Treatment--Night ($22 for 1 oz, drugstore.com).
Rise, but don't shine
Hormonal surges during sleep cause your sebaceous glands to pump oil--and about 14 hours later, you end up shinier than the Harry Winston showroom. Those cursed with oily skin and breakouts can fight acne and grease slicks before they strike with an overnight treatment.
One of our favorites is Vichy Normaderm Night ($20 for 1.7 oz, vichyusa.com).
